My Granddaddy's!

James Sturgeon 1928-1998

This is my Great Granddaddy Sturgeon. He was born October 9, 1928. In 1946 he married his first and only wife Betty and had two children Carol Ann and Glen "Buster". Throughout his life he was a Riflemaker, he made many beautiful guns in his shop up until his death. He was a wonderful man, father, husband and grandfather. I being only fifteen years old didn't have the chance to know him as well as the rest of my family. From what I know of him he was a wonderful man, full of love and life. My Great Grandfather James Sturgeon passed away December 29, 1998. He left behind his daughter Carol, son Buster, granddaughters Julia and Samantha (from Carol), Matthew (Buster), great granddaughters Katie and Tyler (from Julie), and last (from Samantha) Donovan, Monique, Robynn and Baby Miguel! He will be loved and missed as long as all of us are alive and will be carried within our hearts and thoughts. I love you Granddaddy hee hee haa haa! Katie!

Daniel C. Garten 1941-
October 4, 1941 the world changed when my Granddaddy was brought into the world and it was never to be the same! My granddaddy is the craziest, funniest loveable person in the world, when he feels the need! He is the greatest and he breaks the mold for granddaddys all over the world!!! Before he got married he served in the Air Force for 3 years in Chicago, Texas and the to sunny California where he met his soon to be wife, daughter of James Sturgeon, Carol Ann.
On November 9, 1963 my Granddmommie and Granddaddy were married. Exactly 10 months later they had their first daughter, and my mother, Julie Ann, September 9. Seven years later, February 22, they had thier second child Samantha Lynn, my auntie. For the next 12 years of Granddaddy and family lived in Marysville and Placerville and West Sacramento. Between 1981 and 1982 Granddaddy got into a car accident that would change his life for ever. Up until this day he has very severe back problems, which caused him to be home hospitalized for a few months in 94-95. On August 28, 1983 Danny and Carol's first and favorite grandbaby was born the cute and lovable me! Somewhere in between 84 & 86 grandmommie and granddaddy went to Hawaii!!!! From there on we lived in Placerville again, and West Sacramento where the family owned buisness Pleasent Valley Motors was. After about four or five years the family split up and and of the children left home and went their seperate ways (which didn't last for long)!!!
Danny moved to Fair Oaks with his wife Carol and youngest daughter Samantha and her first born Donovan, born December 9, 1988. After one year of living in Fair Oaks the family was once reunited and Julie moved back into the house with her parents, sister and nephew with her daughter (me!) and husband Jordan. After one year of living Julie moved out (again) along with Samantha!
In Present year 1999 my granddaddy is still living life to the fullest (knock on wood) and loving it! He still lives in the same place in Fair Oaks with his wife of almost 36 years and grandson Donovan. He still is working on cars as he always has, he is a wonderful painter and a great granddaddy, father, and friend and always will be!!! I love you DanDaddy!!!!!

The following is a poem that my grandaddy Sturgeon wrote many years ago!
Tombstone, Long Ago
One night we all sat drinking
In one of those Tombstone bars
Outside the town was deathly quiet
As it lay beneath the stars

There I was and a drifter called the Ringo Kid
And a West Texas gunnie named Slim
We'd left the law dogs far behind
In the Dust of the Mogollon Tim

We'd reigned our mounts and hour ago,
And was now in doin' the town
The room was still, as we drank our fill
The news was goin' round

For we were the last of the gunmen
Swaggering, lusty and hard
We'd fight at the drop of a Stetson
We'd draw at the turn of a card

From the Red to the Pecos, to the Powder and back
The Owl-Hoot trail we'd all had shared
We hired our guns to the highest bid
We'd fought whom ever had dared

For two fatal hours we sat at the bar
Passing the drinks around
Then came the clatter of hooves in the dusty street
The posse was comin' to town

We finished our drinks and loosed our guns
And started to leave the room
From out in the night, neath the moon's pale light
Came the gun spoken verdict of doom

I heard the lead buzz and the splinters flew
And the familure creshendos rise
The Kid's hungry colts were spitting fire
His Bullets were snuffing out lives

I breathed the stench of powder smoke
Heard the cries of dying men
The Ringo Kid stopped lawman's lead
The fight was closing then

The Kid lay dead in the gutter
His blood shone in the moon's feeble glow
Slim went down, his gun in his hand
That night in Tombstone, long ago...

Tomorrow my sentennce is over
Sixty years I've laid in this cell
Tomorrow they say I'll be free again
But tonight I'm ridin' for hell

Now I am the last of the gunmen
I've paid for my crimes with the years
But tonight I'll have my retribution
For my sweat, my blood and my tears

Outside I hear my friends comin'
Hoofbeats ring out in the dark
And I feel kinda' happy
As life burns to a last feeble spark

Tomorrow they'll find an old convict
Lying dead in his cell
But tomorrow my soul will be ridin'
Down the dark shadowed trail into hell

My amigos are out there waitin'
Their guns glint in the moons silver glow
They're still the same reckless fellows
That died in Tombstone, long ago....

The Kid still wears the killers grin
And Slims still straight as a rail
They haven't changed much since long ago
When we rode the Owl-Hoot trail

In the East the grey dawn is breakin'
Outside they're ready to go
As we swing to the saddle we're happy and gay
As we were in Tombstone.......Long Ago
